The VoiCEE podcast: what does Trump's return to the White House mean for Ukraine and Poland

In this episode we're looking into the biggest topic of the past month, the president-elect of the United States, Donald J. Trump. Central and Eastern Europe have been a major focus of the current US administration, following Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, and Trump has repeatedly said that he could quickly end this war. The region is also home to key US allies at Russia's doorstep, like Poland, a fellow member of NATO.

To understand what the region is saying about the return of Donald Trump to the White House. Host Joshua Coe speaks to two journalists, UkraineWorld’s deputy editor-in-chief, Anastasiia Herasymchuk and Notes from Poland’s editor-in-chief, Daniel Tilles.

In this podcast series, we look at the region from different angles and perspectives, attempting to capture its diversity and understand emerging trends. Above all, we want to give a voice to a region that is often talked to rather than listened to.

Hello, I'm Joshua Coe and you're listening to The VoiCEE, a news podcast from Central and Eastern Europe about Central and Eastern Europe.

In this monthly podcast series, you'll hear regional perspectives on the biggest topics being discussed, capturing Central and Eastern Europe's diversity of ideas, cultures and history.

The American politicians, even though some statements were really unacceptable, not even for Ukrainians, but I think by Europeans themselves.

Moreover, given the Ukrainian army's manpower problems and the likelihood of growing opposition in the United States and Europe to providing huge amounts of military aid, the Ukrainian army probably will begin to lose ground over time.

Ukraine is not ready for any kind of compromise, but at the same time Russia doesn't express its readiness to take into account Ukraine's position or even any other European American player's position.

Sure, I think that Russia would have to respond somehow to this kind of decisions, but at the same time we shouldn't forget that Russia would escalate its actions, use all the possible weapons it has and test new kinds of weaponry no matter what decisions the USA or European partners would take.

What's the possibility here of European supporters of Ukraine picking things up where the US is hypothetically?

At the same time, we shouldn't underestimate Europe.

Even with the much smaller capabilities than the United States of America have, Europe is still capable of amassing the production or allocating more support to Ukraine.

And for Europe, actually, the Russian threat is more realistic, more feasible and more imminent, let's say.

So in this case, I'm not sure that it would be possible to fully substitute the American support, but at the same time, in case of synergy of efforts of Ukraine and the European partners, at least a certain effect might be achieved.

Even though the situation looks threatening and Trump wants Europe to be more responsible for European affairs and the United States abstent from European issues and focusing on domestic issues, like for Europe

Even though I would assume that it didn't take this threat very seriously and didn't get ready for Trump's presidency the way it should have been done, still for Europe it's the test of maturity, I'd say.

Europe has this chance to prove that it's also a potent power, economic power and military power.

So being self-sufficient, being aware of threats and being ready to protect itself and its allies might be a good thing for Europe and for European future if it's done correctly and timely.

One of them said make Poland great again and the other one said make Europe great again.

Poland has had among the highest levels of migration anywhere in the European Union over the last six, seven years.

Is this something that's happening further afield across Europe right now?
