The VoiCEE podcast: what does Trump's return to the White House mean for Ukraine and Poland

In this episode we're looking into the biggest topic of the past month, the president-elect of the United States, Donald J. Trump. Central and Eastern Europe have been a major focus of the current US administration, following Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, and Trump has repeatedly said that he could quickly end this war. The region is also home to key US allies at Russia's doorstep, like Poland, a fellow member of NATO.

To understand what the region is saying about the return of Donald Trump to the White House. Host Joshua Coe speaks to two journalists, UkraineWorld’s deputy editor-in-chief, Anastasiia Herasymchuk and Notes from Poland’s editor-in-chief, Daniel Tilles.

And then on the other side you have a camp centered around Donald Tusk, who is now the Prime Minister, which is more liberal.

But from reading your analysis this month, there is one major difference and that's how Donald Tusk and his opponents in the Law and Justice Party view Donald Trump, as you know we were talking about.

So what has Tusk been saying about Donald Trump?

This echoed a lot of the rhetoric that was used by Tusk's camp in the past, suggesting that Donald Trump is at best overly sympathetic towards Russia, and at worst is dependent on Russia, somehow working with Russia, which they suggested would be against not only Ukraine's interests, but also against Poland's interests as well.

You wrote back in October that immigration was quote a much needed debate in Poland in regards to Donald Tusk's policy shift there.

I wanted to ask what exactly has been the shift from Donald Tusk on immigration?

What we've seen over the last two years is a shift towards a much tougher position on migration from Donald Tusk.

During the parliamentary election campaign in Poland last year, in 2023, when Donald Tusk was in opposition and hoping to come to power,

During its eight years in power, Poland has experienced its biggest wave of migration in history, but he also especially focused on the fact that although most immigrants have come from Ukraine and many others from Belarus, Poland's eastern neighbours, there's also a growing number of migrants coming from Muslim majority countries, from African countries, and this is something that Donald Tusk used against the Law and Justice Government.

This campaign ad really epitomized the shift that took place in Polish politics on this issue and especially from Donald Tusk and his camp.

This was exploited by Donald Tusk's camp as evidence during the election campaign last year that the law and justice government had been too soft on migration, that it had talked tough on migration, but actually in reality it was letting in record numbers of people into the country and that in particular this advert and much of the rhetoric from Tusk's camp focused not on the large numbers of Ukrainian
