Meta gets rid of fact-checkers in the US: What does this mean for Europe? #147
Last week Mark Zuckerberg announced that Meta will end its partnership with fact-checkers in the next few months - for now in the United States. He acknowledged that they proved to be “too politically biased and destroyed more trust than they built.” He also said that “too many mistakes were made during content moderation and there was too much censorship.” This is now set to change. How is the job of an independent fact-checker different from the job of a Facebook content moderator? Is there a methodology to reduce the risk of a bias? What's next for the content verification program? Will it be terminated in Europe as well? We talked about this with our guest: Carlos Hernández- Echevarría, associate director at Maldita.es, a Spanish foundation dedicated to fighting disinformation, and former president of the association of European fact-checking organizations EFCSN and head of its policy task force.
Wstajemy rano, otwieramy oczy, do porannej kawy scrollujemy internet. Zapraszamy! Mateusz Cholewa i Wiola Myszkowska. Hi, my name is Wiola Myszkowska. Last week Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, announced some changes to Meta platforms in the US. Here's a fragment of that announcement. So we built a lot of complex systems to moderate content, but the problem with complex systems
But the first step he listed is, quote, getting rid of fact-checkers. którzy, według niego, są zbyt politycznie białymi i zniszczyli więcej zaufania niż stworzyli, zwłaszcza w Stanach Zjednoczonych".
That is simply not true. Fact-checking organizations go to great lengths to make sure we are not biased. Actually, you know, both Demagog and Maldita, my organization, we are both credential members of EFCSN, the European Association of Fact-Checkers.
That's it for today. You can support our work on Patronite and visit our website. You can also find us on social media, X, Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. Thank you and until next time.
