Yeah, the CEBL, the Canadian Elite Basketball League, which this is my fourth summer in it. It's a summer league, a summer professional league. It's a unique timeframe and it's held at this time because of the weather in Canada and the fact that basketball does not want to go kind of head to head with ice hockey. It's a really great league. It's into its seventh year now. I think there's 30 plus players who have NBA connection, like either played in the CBL, gone to the NBA. So it's rising, it's developing. I love it. It's a lot of fun. You know, it's similar to the Canadian Football League, where you have five teams in the East and five teams in the West and it's all over Canada.
So it's a similar league like, let's say, the NBA or G League. It's more similar to the G League with the talent level. But the organizations are first class. Our organization here in Winnipeg, the owner, David Asper, is a first class guy. Runs the organization in a great way. I have tremendous support, great coaching staff. The facilities are fantastic. We play in the Canada Life Centre, which is the home for the Winnipeg Jets and the NHL. Great practice facility at Sport for Life here in Winnipeg. For me, it's kind of like my NBA. As a general manager and head coach, I'm able to put together a roster. I'm able to organize a lot of the systems and tactics.
I absolutely love it. It's so much fun. I've had four great years in the league. This is my third year in Winnipeg and it's really been a lot of fun. Kanada Basketball traditionally has been only about the Toronto Raptors, but I think you look at all of the players that are in the NBA and you know, there's even been some really good Canadian players that have played recently in the Polish League. Teams are more and more recruiting Canadian players, basketball is rising in the nation and I'm really enjoying my experience here over the last four summers. Do you see the progress when it comes to the popularity of basketball in Canada?
Oh, it was a team with great aspirations.
Michał Winiarczyk, Mike Taylor, Poland, Koszuchowski Basketball Team Koszuchowski Basketball Team My friend Will Voigt with the Bakersfield Jam. My friend Jay Laranega, who was with the Erie Bayhawks.
You've seen the best in the game work and I think you kind of get an idea like alright this is the level, this is the standard and I'm going to be the best version of myself, I'm going to coach to my strengths, but I know what the best looks like and that kind of gives you a little confidence and belief and I think it helps give you direction. Sheldon Mack, pomogliśmy mu przyjechać do ligi. DeJuan Somers, pomogliśmy mu przyjechać do NBA. Chris Wright, pomogliśmy mu przyjechać do NBA.
But I think that, you know, the way I like to build a team, you need to have post up guys, guys that can create advantages in the post. You need to have guards who can play pick and roll and preferably someone along with your point guard. Size for position is critical. I think size and length is really important in basketball. But I think you can't get too caught up in playing faster than your team is capable. And I think that's a mistake a lot of people here in North America make. They see the NBA teams like the Indiana Pacers right now playing tremendously fast, but they have players that can play that way, players that are built to play that way. So it's not good offense if I come up to court and get a shot up with three seconds and there's no offensive rebound.
So how you see yourself in today basketball when like you said it's all about almost all about pace all about three pointers we see how the warriors change like the basketball not only in NBA but globally in entire world and you know I have so many friends that said Oh, I wish like we have like old school basketball again, like, you know, all pistons from 2000s and stuff like that. But we see like how many three pointers everybody should include that. Coaches now wanted, looking for centers that can shoot free. And do you like how this, how basketball was evolving?
So I think the key for everyone is understanding, you know, where you're coaching and where you're playing. For example, the European game is different than the North American game. So what's the North American game? The NBA, right? And I'll give you this experience that I had. I was asked to help the young coaching staff for the Basketball Champions League America, Brampton Honey Badgers. Sheldon Kissimmee, young coach, was named the head coach and the league, it was a collection of all the CBL players that were going to play. Wielkie dzięki i do zobaczenia w kolejnych odcinkach!
You know, it was just around the time the Raptors won the NBA Championship. So the idea was we're going to play the same defensive concepts as the Toronto Raptors. So that meant our fives, centers, were staying in a drop, right? The NBA, why do the fives stay in a drop, right? They stay in a drop because they're playing the analytics game. You're trying to force guys into mid-range, you know, pull up jump shots rather than, you know, open yourself up to rotation because you're in a hard show, for example. However, when we played these teams, we played six games and we played FIBA rules, right?
We did not have impact at the ball at the point of attack with a show or a trap or a switch. We sat in that drop and these teams, good teams, right, basketball champions league level teams, 30 assists in every game. 30 assists! So the point was, you know, you're not going to take... NBA concepts and put them in the FIBA game because it's a different game, right? You have to understand what league you're coaching in. If you give FIBA guards who are strong and smart and team-oriented, it's not just one-on-one to score or two-on-two to score. I'm reading where's the help.
The low man's pulled in. I'm going to make the diagonal skip pass, right? Oh, they got two on the ball. I'm going to move it with an advanced pass. I'm not going to hold on to it and try to score for me. FIBA to inny styl.
Zobaczył wiele różnych systemów i rzeczy w zakresie basketu.
Zróbmy to z perspektywy osobistej strony. Widziałem, jak te chłopaki interakcjonowali razem.
And offensively, I think you could play Marcin as a five and Maciek as a four, because Maciek can shoot and he can do some things. But I just felt like... Budujemy to wokół Lampe, NBA zawodnika. Nie. Chcieliśmy budować to wokół polskiego nationalnego zespołu. Więc tak to działało. W pierwszym miesiącu nie mieliśmy żadnego. W drugim miesiącu podjęliśmy się do Gortatu z powodu Eurobasket 2015. I kilka miesięcy później podjęliśmy się do Maciek. It just worked out that way. From my standpoint, both guys were really good for our team.
And he was always very good to me there. You know, went to dinner many times and did his, you know, the Gortak game, coached in his celebrity all-star game and have some fun memories from that. So, you know, that was a really good time. And unfortunately, After that, he basically decided, hey, I'm going to focus on the NBA. I'm no longer going to be with the national team. And that kind of shifted our focus more towards Maciej Klampe.
And at the time I was pushing for two passport players because you never know, one would have an injury, one would not want to play for a personal reason, whatever. We wanted to always have someone. I felt if you were going to do it right, you got two. Well, we settled on one. And we had several names, but AJ, ponieważ grał w Francji.
Obviously, we love the USA. You know, it's where we grew up. But we're also realistic. Like, you know, there's only a special few that get a chance to be on that national team. So the fact that we're outside of, you know, the USA and we're getting a chance to be on this stage is something special. And that's what I said to people The whole China thing was, you know, my career path has taken me outside of the mainstream, right? I'm not coaching a major college team or a pro team in the NBA.
What an unbelievable talent.
He was a legend in college, but his NBA career could have been a lot different. I don't know if people realize, but Paul Westphal, the coach who drafted him, got fired seven games into his rookie season. There's some great shooting guards out there.
