Where do you go when you can’t go home?

The region has faced complex and evolving humanitarian challenges. Wlada Sachowicz is my today's guest. He is a humanitarian and human rights expert at the International Rescue Committee supporting programs for refugees and displaced communities across Central and Eastern Europe. Good afternoon. Currently for IRC Poland I do I support the office in their business development work. So they're actually envisioned expansion to the Central and Eastern Central and East Europe. This is the area where the IRC Serbia office previously operated while the office was operational.

It's not anymore. So what I bring to the office is, I suppose, the experience of working in those In those areas because a lot of the work IRC does actually is related to working with local partner organizations in these countries. So we don't necessarily come in as expats to a country assuming some superior knowledge. We come knowing that the organizations and people who work there Have very specific knowledge from the ground, knowledge of the context and capacities to implement high level of work. So we work in partnership with those organizations. And seeing as I partnered with over 30 organizations in that region, it made sense for me also to work in Poland. So I can work remotely as well because it doesn't involve at the moment any work on the ground in direct program delivery.

So I don't necessarily work at the moment with How do you ensure that your programs are shaped by the voices of refugees themselves rather than only your assessments? We try to triangulate as much information to see what the gaps are in service provision if we're not there initially, which gaps we can fill based on our experience and different areas of protection and what people essentially really need for the most part. So we tried to respond to actual needs in that way. And Moldova was the first one, then with IRC Serbia office we continued going to Slovakia, Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, the Czech Republic where we implemented these types of assessments as well.

What we contribute is to our, let's say, different methodologies of work and to our previous experience and the expertise of people working in the wider IRC, the organization that numbers more than 10,000 employees working across the world.
