My name is Dorota Hajdrich and today with me there is Mr Kevin Allen, the UNHCR Representative in Warsaw.

Kevin has been working for UNHCR across the globe for over 20 years, including his work in Bangladesh.

We will be talking about UNHCR at Seventy-Five on the agency's achievements, limitations and the path that lies ahead for the UNHCR.

This environment poses a serious challenge to refugee protection, the very purpose for which UNHCR was established in 1950.

How do you perceive the role of UNHCR today?

One of the things that we pursued and one of my first jobs in UNHCR was submitting some of those individuals who were most vulnerable, most at risk to countries like the United States, Canada, Australia, for example, for what we call third country resettlements.

Do you think that broadening UNHCR's mandate has strengthened the agency by allowing it to address a wider range of humanitarian challenges or has it perhaps created additional burdens that risk diluting its ability to fulfill its original mission of refugee protection?

These and other developments prompted the UN Secretary General to introduce the so-called UNHCR Initiative, which has already had an impact across UN agencies and programs.

How has UNHCR been affected by these developments?

For UNHCR, do you think that you are always perceived as independent organization that is always working based on the needs of individuals or are your activities perceived as more politicized than in cases of non-governmental organizations?

We have really made great efforts in UNHCR globally to do everything that we can to support them with security-related advice and technical support and systems.
