10. EPISODE IN ENGLISH: The Hopefulness of Coal Town Cosmopolitanism- guest David Rubinstein.
Our guest today is David Rubinstein, currently a Fulbright scholar working in Poland. He has been busy since September sifting through materials in local archives across Lower Silesia. Focusing on the town of Wałbrzych to reconstruct the thrilling uncertainty of the early postwar era, David challenges teleological narratives and regards 1945 to 1949 as a uniquely hopeful period rather than simply a prelude to inevitable stalinization. Thrilling? Hopeful? Not the first words that come to mind when one thinks about early post-war Europe, and Wałbrzych in particular. How did this small coal mining town come to be the center of a transnational, pan European saga of migration and multi-ethnicity? Your host is Barbara Pendzich, a lecturer at the Taube Department on the history of Jews in medieval and early modern Poland. She also helps out in the Department’s administrative office. David Rubinstein is affiliated while in Poland with the Taube Department through its faculty member Kamil Kijek, his advisor/sponsor. His academic home is Cornell University, where he is writing a PhD that examines shifting borders, mass resettlement, and the economics of socialist state building in early postwar Lower Silesia – a formerly German region transferred to Poland in 1945. "Jews and other Poles" - because we at the Taube Department of Jewish Studies at the University of Wrocław are convinced that the history and culture of Jews are an integral part of the history and culture of Poland.
