21. EPISODE IN ENGLISH: Rules of Engagement: The Jewish Intellectual Elite in Pre-War Breslau - host Adam Heimrath, guest speaker Tim Buchen
In this episode, historian Tim Buchen speaks with Adam Heimrath about the rise of Jewish residents of pre-war Breslau to leading positions in politics, science, business, and healthcare from emancipation edict of 1812 in Prussia until1933.
Buchen discusses decisions regarding formal education, career strategies, the formation of networks through membership in clubs, parties and associations, that Jews had to make to advance. He takes a socio-historical approach to investigate a larger group of academics together with a cultural-historical perspective on selected individual careers over several generations to get a fuller picture of the process.
The podcast discusses how Jewish citizens – men and women - were able to navigate both emancipation laws as well as the Prussian education and entitlement system to rise to elite positions; how Jewish norms and traditions of education and welfare could be applied and how they were transformed; and what effects the new economic and political contexts of the Weimar Republic had on strategies for social advancement that allowed Jewish men and women to get to the top and stay there.
