Both sides of the Atlantic | WEC 2026

We invite to listen to the discussions recorded during the Warsaw European Conversation, an annual conference by Polityka Insight and the European Council on Foreign Relations. In five episodes we discuss Europe’s readiness for war, digital sovereignty, the competitiveness of the EU economies, European elections and energy policy.

In today’s episode, we discuss the future of transatlantic relations and the evolution of security policy on both sides of the Atlantic. We examine France’s strategic stance and the implications of potential leadership change. We also look at the dynamics of U.S. domestic politics – the role of political parties and civil society in curbing Donald Trump’s power, and the significance of the midterm elections. We consider what these processes mean for Europe, especially in the context of Article 5. Joining Marta Prochwicz-Jazowska, Deputy Head of the ECFR Warsaw office, in the discussion will be Thomas Gomart, director of the French Institute of International Relations, and Amanda Sloat, professor at the School of Politics, Economics, and Global Affairs at IE University. Enjoy the episode!

The Trump administration fundamental orientation.

I wouldn't say the same for the whole US system, of course, but for the Trump administration it is very clear.

And also we observe in pure diplomatic terms, you know, that what is decided by President Trump is supposed to be implemented only by two of his fellows, Serge Witkow and Jared Kushner.

President Trump does not manage to end the war in Ukraine in 24 hours, topples regimes in Venezuela, imposes tariffs across the globe.

Why aren't Republicans saying no to Donald Trump and why aren't Democrats more prominent?

In terms of what's happening domestically, you have Republicans within Congress that really seem to have gotten co-opted by Trump's control of the MAGA party.

And I think you are seeing a number of Republicans privately expressing concern about what is Trump doing, privately expressing concern to the White House.

Trump, for example, in his first term started talking about fake news and stolen elections.

When I was in the Biden administration, I would argue that there had been an erosion in the first Trump administration of an inclusive interagency policy making process.

Trump joked when he was sitting with President Zelenski in the Oval Office a year ago, I believe that was, about the idea that Ukraine was not able to have elections because of martial law.

That idea seemed to be quite appealing to Trump.

Więc jeśli wybranie, wypracowanie, wypracowanie jest na bieżąco, czy wygryzanie Gminy zmieni tak bardzo, w sensie zmęczenia Donalda Trumpa?

Trump is doing a lot through executive orders, he doesn't need legislation to act in foreign policy terms, and so it wouldn't change a tremendous amount there.

On the impeachment question, you're right that it is very possible that the House would move on articles of impeachment as it did during Trump's first term.

Trump belatedly recognizing the value of Europe and NATO, that you have very strategically located bases that he wanted to use for the military action in Iran, that Europe has effective militaries that he wants to help open the Strait of Hormuz.
